Starters by Lissa Price
"I'm Mr. Tinnenbaum. Welcome to Prime Destinations."
What's the 411?
This book is focused on
Callie’s life after the Spore Wars wiped out the population of people between
the ages of 20-60. She is responsible for her little brother, Tyler. They are
squatters now in run down buildings since their parents were part of the
population that didn’t survive, and they didn’t have any grandparents to live
with. Callie decides that she is going to work for a program that allows the
older elites to rent out the teenage bodies via a neurochip placed in the
brain. However, the neurochip they placed in Callie’s brain malfunctions and
she gets to experience the life her renter had planned out for the month. She
realizes that this company is not being honest about their plans for the future,
and the person who rented her body is trying to get Callie to see that and help
it come to a stop. There is a group that is trying to put an end to the Prime Destinations. An end to the evil plans they have in store. Will she be able to help them? Read the book to find out!
So what?
Why should you read this book? If you are into futuristic technology in our modern world, then this would be the book for you. You get to see the advances in technology this society has made after a war it has had, and what they choose to do with the technology. You might see how it has helped them in a positive way, or you might agree with the resistance in thinking that it's a bad thing to have this kind of technology. Young readers are growing up in a time where technology is taking off, and we may be close to having a type of technology that will allow us to do something like this. We need to show them what the negative consequences could be of technology, and that while it may look like a good thing, sometimes we need to take a step back and see what could potentially happen.
Thoughts and Rating
I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. ★★★☆☆
I am not as big into futuristic books if it doesn't grab my attention right away. This book had a slow start and it was hard for me to get into it. Towards the end of the book it starts to pick up the pace when they start putting some of their plan into action, but it takes a while to get there. At the very end, it does leave you wondering what will happen nest with Callie and what her life will look like after the fact. I do not think I will be picking up the next books to read based on how long it took this one to get going.
