Week 3- Vocabulary Fun!

1. Swat the Vocab- http://foreverinfifthgrade.blogspot.com/2019/03/swat-vocab.html
I always loved doing these as a student. It is fun and super interactive. It allows for the students to get out of their seats and have fun, while also learning new words!
A fun and easy vocabulary game to play with your students!
2. Vocabulary Spinner- http://www.blue-raysite.com/
This is a fun game to play, that makes the student practice all things about the vocabulary word. They could have a stack of their vocab words that they pull from for every turn, and after they spin, they have to apply that to their word.
Vocabulary game...use with the spinners on my board
3. Word Detectives- https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Context-Clue-Activities-4002587?pp=1
These vocab words are used in a sentence and allow the students to make inferences about the words, and figure out what the word might mean. I think this would be a great activity to do before giving out the definitions about the words to allow them to explore.
It can be so hard to teach context clues to your students sometimes. This weekly activity is a great way to teach your students how to use contexxt clues to build their vocabulary. #contextclues #buildingvocabulary #vocabularyactivities #upperelementary #teaching #reading #readersworkshop
4. Vocabulary Bingo- http://secondaryenglishcoffeeshop.blogspot.com/2018/04/teaching-vocabulary.html
This is another game that I think students would like, and it's great practice. Instead of picking the word, the teacher would read the definition, and the students will have to figure out the word and cover it up to make a Bingo!
Try this free Vocabulary Bingo activity from Presto Plans to help your students review new vocabulary words in any subject area!
5. Vocabulary Jenga- https://helloliteracy.blogspot.com/2017/08/using-painted-jenga-blocks-for-fun.html
The words for the students are at the top of the paper. Depending on the block pulled, that's the word you do. Then you roll a dice and do the task laid out by the teacher. This can be spelling, definitions, use in a sentence, etc. Who doesn't love Jenga?

Week 2- Word Walls

This is the first word wall the caught my eye. I love the simplicity of it, and how it's not in your face like some other word walls I've seen. I would have this up on a wall in my classroom and use it like a typical word wall. I would have student's go up and look for words to spell before asking me, and have them practice words during word work, or station time.

I would use this in a kindergarten or first grade classroom. After reviewing a sound, I would have a student of the week that would get to place the magnets with the pictures in the correct box. The rest of the class would have to decide if the magnet was placed in the right sound box. Throughout the year, more and more pictures will be added, and new pictures can get added as more questions are asked about how to spell certain words.

I really like the idea of a portable word wall. It allows for the students to take the word rings down to help with spelling, or to help with a word work job. You can add words as the year goes on, like frequently misspelled words, word study words, and the grade level list of words. It's truly portable, and it's a great space saver in the classroom!

Week 1: 2 Truths-1 Lie

Here we go! Summer classes have started and this is my one class for the first 8 weeks. I feel like the class last night had a good overview of everything we will be talking about over the next 8 weeks. While it feels a little bit overwhelming, I know that that's how it always feels the first night of class. I am excited to create a unit plan using ELA, since it is an area I'm not as confident in teaching. To clarify, we have to use ELA with a project and a writing assignment with rubrics... Did I understand that right? Will creating an opinion piece work if they have to create a rough draft on a planner paper and then create an online book with pictures count as their project? I know I asked that in class, but you said you wanted some time to think about it. Just let me know your thoughts and I can come up with another idea!

I wanted to use this website to do it because I saw the third graders this year do it and really enjoy it!

2 Truths, 1 Lie
1. I had to go to speech for my R/S sounds, even thought they are both in my name
2. I went to 3 different elementary schools in 3 different states growing up
2. My mom was a 2nd grade teacher

Good Luck 😀

Introduction for Teaching Language Arts

Hello!
My name is Rachel Scott. I am getting my degree in Elementary Education, and will be graduating in December. I have three summer classes before I get to move on to Student Teaching in the Fall. I will be in a third grade classroom at New Haven Elementary here in Columbia and I am so excited to get started! I also have worked at this school for the past two years as a paraprofessional. Some days are definitely harder than others.

I have lived in Columbia since I was in seventh grade, but moved around and lived in 5 states before that. I lived in Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, and Illinois. I enjoy going to the movies ( just saw Endgame last weekend, OMG), hanging out with friends, going to concerts, watching my sister play volleyball, and going to my brothers band concerts.

Currently, I am trying to get back into reading, and have felt a sudden urge to want to read again. I have started to read Grey, Christian's perspective from the 50 Shades books. I have picked this book up many times, but never made progress on it. I'm also starting to read To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han because the movie recently came out on Netflix. and I loved her other series when I was in 8th grade. I decided I should read this one too!
